Linux Distro Survey

Credit: SurveyMonkey.com
Katherine and I are interested in getting a general feel for the kinds of readers coming to Linux Advocates and what their preferences are as well as other marketing characteristics.  To better understand, we will be doing a series of surveys to gauge different aspects that qualify the interests and make-up of our readership.

To that end, I've taken today's Distrowatch list of the top 100 Linux Distributions and formatted the 6 month list into a survey.

The survey will be taken until end of day tomorrow with the results revealed on Friday, February 15th.

Please participate in the survey below!  And Thank You!

Note: If you use more than one Distro and still want to participate in this survey, please choose the one which you use most often.

  1. Wish I could participate. I'm a multi distro user and I'm only allowed to choose one.

    1. It's up to you if you want to participate and register which Distro you use most often. Thanks.

  2. Kent, feel free to pick any one you like. I've used a dozen different distros or more and even toyed with making my own. I chose Arch because it is 1. What I currently use and 2. I really do think it is the best distro out there.

    1. SolusOS is going in the direction I am most comfortable with. Additional feature additions to their Nautilus fork Athena pretty much nails it for me

    2. That is most encouraging news! Thanks Ken!

  4. Debian remains the most versatile distribution. That's why two-thirds of all current distros are ultimately based on it.

I also appreciate Debian's approach on free software. It encourages you to install a free system, but, ultimately, the choice is yours.

    2. Amen. When I was a newbie, I looked for the "easiest" distro to install and to use. That distro died long ago but I eventually connected with Debian and haven't regretted the choice. The repository is huge and covers all the bases. If you learn how to use the package manager and SSH there's hardly anything you cannot do. Debian is like an apple tree. You plant it and it grows for many years giving bountiful fruit. Without much effort you will grow with it as well. I now recommend Debian to newbies.

  5. Oh, well, I must vote for the home team, PCLinuxOS. But it is not the only one I use.

  8. Hmmm...I boot between Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon, Netrunner 12.12 KDE, and SolusOS 1.2. Yup, can't make up my mind and love the choice of being able to "boot-to-my-mood."

    1. With Linux, I used to prefer Ubuntu but am moving more and more to Mint Cinnamon. It is good if one distro does not move in a direction you like there are many, many more to choose from.

  10. fyi,

This am, I had made a change to the survey question to add the words 'most often'.
Unfortunately, the Javascript link broke, which caused the survey to disappear. I have since re-created the embedded script code and the survey is back.

    Sorry for the confusion.
    P.S. this survey runs until 12:00 pm GMT-5 Friday February 15, 2013.
