In truth, the issue was not Fuduntu's fault at all.
Turns out, a cat with a fascination for wires and possessing sharp incisor teeth neatly cut not one but both wire leads to the PC's external speakers. Well done. :/

Dear sir, thank you for your bug report, please be aware that cat /dev/urandom | cut -c2 is not recommended, as it may damage your hardware.
